winged victory – armless though it is
The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, is a third century B.C. marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (which means Victory). Situated on a landing in the Louvre, you reach it by climbing two sets of stairs so the sculpture towers over you as you climb toward it. Its arms have never been recovered but it seems that her right hand was cupped around her mouth (don’t know how they figured that out) as she descended from the heavens toward the victorious fleet below. She is standing on the prow of ship and perhaps graced an amphitheatre or an alter. One of the important displays to see at the Louvre.
